Investing in a vintage Rolex Submariner, choose the Rolex Submariner 5513

Thinking of acquiring a vintage Submariner rather than a contemporary Submariner? This is a very good idea and Watch-Deal is one of the best places to find your pre-owned Rolex Submariner. The most popular vintage Rolex watches are, without a doubt, the Submariner and the Sea-Dweller. Vintage means that the timepiece has been produced before the 1990s. Vintage Rolex are even more interesting than modern references because their production has been stopped and they take value year after year. A beautiful Rolex Submariner Ref. 5513. from 1978 with a matt dial is a very good investment. From the COMEX watches, issued for the diving company, to the military Milsub Rolex Submariner, we find that investing in a pre-owned Rolex Submariner 5513 is a very smart choice. The first Rolex Milgauss, for example, was not in great demand, and due to poor sales, production was abandoned. Today, a Rolex Milgauss watch from the first serie - in very good condition - worths $15,000.

The calibre of the Rolex Sub 5513 : 1520 or 1530

The mechanism equipping the 5513 was initially the Rolex 1520 caliber and the Rolex 1530 caliber at the end of the production (less than 1000 units). Ancestors of the Rolex Submariner 14060, the Rolex Submariner 5513 were produced with matt dials and painted indexes from 1962 to around 1985. Dials with circled indexes from around 1985 to 1990, these 5513 are therefore more difficult to differentiate from the 14060 or 14060M.

The dials of the 5513 :

The 5513 were manufactured, during these 28 years of production, with several types of dials variants. The 5513 are only made of 316L steel, fitted with a plexy glass, water resistant to 200m (660 ft) and are equipped with a rotating bezel so dear to divers. This is the first reference to introduce the 7mm protection protecting the crown from shocks, the "crown guard". A special model is produced for the French diving company, COMEX founded in 1961, it then bears the reference 5514.

The bracelets you can find on your 5513

1962-1969: Bracelet Rolex 6636 riveted extensible or the 7206 riveted non-extensible.
1972-1989: Bracelet Rolex 93150 Oyster full links
The Milsubs (military Submariner whose production started in 1965) were equipped with NATO bracelets.

Possible serial numbers on Rolex 5513

The serial number on your 5513 Rolex must be from 763 663 to E999 999

Additional info about the Rolex 5513 :

You may find a glossy dial with circled indexes on a Submariner 5513 if it has recently undergone a Rolex service. Avoid them. We do not recommend this type of operation: prefer to keep your timepiece with its original dial.

Is it the good time to get a Rolex 5513 ?

Yes, this is the right time to acquire a Rolex 5513 without date because at the moment they are not so much sought-after, its value hasn't stopped climbing in these last years and the offer is declining year after year. Ten years ago, in 2010, for the most common models of 5513 from the 1970s, ranged from $2,950 to $7,000. Today the cheapest Rolex 5513 will be around $4,500. Some models (special inscriptions, etc...) will reach $15,000.

Pre-owned Rolex Submariner Ref. 16610 available

The Rolex 16610 has been produced between late 1986 to 2010 (possible serial numbers from 9,290,000 to V 999,999). The Rolex Sub 16610 is equipped with the Rolex self-winding movement, calibre 3135, 31 jewels with quick-change date.
The production of the 16610  marked the introduction of the calibre 3135 still used for the Submariner Date 116610. This model is declined in 18K gold under the reference 16618 and also in Gold/Steel under the reference 16613. It is probably the most accomplished of the Rolex Submariner, bringing important technical improvements and keeping aspects essential to its charm, such as its bezel which does not have the brilliance of ceramics but rather tends to patinate.

Main characteristics of the Rolex Submariner 16610

The differences compared to its ancestors, the Rolex Submariner 1680 or the Rolex Submariner 16800, are:

- the Oyster case, now in 904L steel.
- the bracelet with the "Flip Lock" clasp
- a "Trip Lock" screw-down crown
- a sapphire crystal
- the famous Solid End Links (SEL), i.e. the end links of solid bracelets, introduced around 2000, randomly then serially.
- a new movement: the Rolex caliber 3135
- the water-resistance of this professional diver's watch is maintained at 300m (1000ft).

Five types of dials for the Submariner 16610:

Mark I: from 1989 to 1998 inscription SWISS-T< 25 at 6 o'clock. (possible serial numbers from 9 290 000 to U xxx xxx)
Mark II: from 1998 to 1999 SWISS registration at 6 a.m. (possible serial numbers from U 000 001 to A 999 999)
Mark III: from 2000 to 2006 inscription SWISS MADE at 6 o'clock (possible serial numbers from A 000 001 to Z 999 999) Appearance in 2003 of the 16610T, end of the pierced horn gap.
Mark IV: from 2006 to 2008 inscription SWISS MADE at 6 o'clock (possible serial numbers from Z 000 001 to V 999 999 series) but the 1000 and the 300 have now their zeros completely round and no more ovalized. Appearance of the engraved top in 2007.
Mark V: from 2008 to 2009 inscription SWISS MADE at 6 o'clock (possible serial numbers from M 000 001 to V 999 999) inscription Oyster Perpetual Date with a larger space between the words than before.

Two types of bracelets for the Rolex 16610 :

-Oyster bracelet ref.93150 (possible serial numbers from 9 290 000 to Y 999 999 )
-New Oyster SEL bracelet ref.93250 introduction from 2000 to 2003 (serial numbers possible from P 000 001)
Prefer models with solid end links (SEL) bracelets.

Our opinion about the Rolex Submariner 16610

The Rolex Submariner 16610 saw its production stopped in 2010 and was replaced by the 116610 which is radically different from the previous Submariner by the shape of its case and its shiny ceramic bezel.
It is thus the last of a "line" with this Oyster case, finally benefiting from a SEL strap and still having the pierced lugs, so important to Sub lovers, allowing an easy strap change.

Worth of a pre-owned Rolex Submariner 16610 :

On the second-hand market in 2020, one should count about $6,000 (all taxes included) for a pre-owned Rolex Submariner 16610 in good condition but without box and without papers, the authenticity of these watches being easily verifiable this last point is not so important for this model. For a watch with its original case and papers, count 10% more, i.e. about $6,600 including tax.

Its value will keep on rising and it is already not rare to see new models in stock 25% more expensive than Rolex Submariner 16610.
